What is the Create Your Own Tool?

This tool allows the customers who visit your store to create and/or customize their own product. The Create Your Own tool is free to use and production costs are not affected.

 Personalization is a profit-boosting feature. Customers expect to pay a bit extra for customization, and it gives the product a personal touch. This tool is a great way to target gift buyers and group buyers.

SPOD’s Create Your Own Tool is based on the tool by Spreadshirt, which has generated over $50 million. Boost your profits and give your customers more freedom of expression with the SPOD Create Your Own Tool.

 

 

How can I add the Create Your Own Tool to my Shopify store

Providing customers with the opportunity to customize their own gear is invaluable, and you’ll surely see a positive impact on your sales. Fortunately, adding SPOD’s Create Your Own Tool to your Shopify store is a piece of cake.

To activate this customization tool for your Shopify store, visit your settings in the SPOD app. After you’ve activated the tool, you’ll need to determine your earnings for these personalized products. 

To see the Create Your Own Tool, visit your store and click “Pages” (you can also use the “See it in your shop” button).

Within the tool, you have the option to use our free design library, include your own designs, disable the free design library, or censor the library by disabling adult designs.

There are a few other points you should keep in mind when adding this essential resource to your Shopify store:

  • You’ll need to manually add the Create Your Own Tool page to your store’s navigation
  • Do *NOT* change the Javascript of the page
  • We’re not responsible for the restyling of your page. Make sure the look and feel of your store is still to your liking after you add the tool
  • Do *NOT* unpublish the Create Your Own product

 

 

 

  

 

 

Defining Your Earnings for the Create Your Own Tool

You might not think twice about assigning a specific price tag to a customized product, but the value of this merchandise could make or break a sale. The best route is defining a percentage-based earning that revolves around the base-price of a product.

After setting your commission in the settings, the calculated end-price will be paid by the customer. We'll invoice our standard rate of product + shipping costs. There is no extra fee related to this option.

How do I add customizable products to my product list?

Currently, your customers have the ability to create products from scratch. However, you may want to provide them with templates that are accessible via your product list.

To access these templates, you’ll need to:

  • adjust the page template we added to your theme
  • assign the page template to the applicable product 

Adjust the template

First, go to the ‘themes’ section in your online store.

On the "actions" dropdown, select the item "Edit Code." On the left side of the screen, you will see the “templates" section. Scroll down and look for the “product.[number].liquid” template. The corresponding number refers to the page number where that Create Your Own Tool lives. It is possible you have more than one template saved, as shown below, this is because each time the Create Your Tool is activated or de-activated it creates a new page. Please note down the number of which template you edit, the easiest way to do this is just to edit the first one. 

You will subsequently see code that looks as follows:

Delete this code and paste the following onto the page:

Save the changes and proceed to the next step of the process. So long as you don't de-activate the Create Your Own Tool, this only ever needs to be done once. 

So far, the changes do not change anything in your shop. This means everything will look and work as before

Assign the page template to the applicable product 

Now you need to go back to your Shopify admin, to the Products section, and select the product you want to see as a template. This can be done for as many products as you like, but each individual product needs to have the template changed. So you create a "template" by creating a normal product in our SPOD app, pushing it in into your store, and then switching it to a custom product by editing the theme template. 

So first find the product you want to use as a template, then on the product detail page, scroll down and find the area "theme templates." Open the dropdown and select “product.[number].” (add in which number you edited). After you save these changes, the product will work as a template. Please see again the screenshot below for an example. 

It is important that you do NOT use the product with the name "Your Customized Product.” This is the product that collects all items your customers have added to their basket via the Create Your Own Tool.

Product Example

Below we included an example of how this can be used. The listing looks like a normal product in your store, but then when clicked the customer is able to customize the product with adding a message of their choice.

How does deep linking work with the Create Your Own Tool

SPOD’s new deep linking feature allows merchants to add parameters to the Create Your Own Tool.

Previously, when a customer clicked your shop’s CYO link, they’d be taken directly to the tool. Now, merchants can specify what the customer will specifically see when they enter the tool. Besides the CYO function, merchants can also specify any design topics, design IDs, or products.

There are three specific functionalities of the new deep linking feature:

Will created items show up in my product admin?

Yes… sort of. When a customer is finished creating a product, it will be added to their cart. At this time, the SPOD App needs to create a Shopify product, (allowing the Shopify checkout to handle pricing and such). The SPOD App will create one variant for each product created and added to the basket via the Create Your Own Tool.

Once the limit of 100 product variants is used up, we'll create another one. This product might also be visible in the list pages of your store, but it will always deep-link to the Create Your Own Tool page.

You should never unpublish the product if you've activated the CYO setting.

Remember to delete or unpublish this product once you've deactivated the Create Your Own Tool.

Why is the product image in the cart so small? 

You may notice that the images are a bit pixelated. This is to avoid any security risks; we don’t want outsiders to steal the images, especially if they contain personal information. In the future, we’ll be optimizing our security, at which time we’ll provide customers/merchants with a high-resolution image. This will allow you, the merchant, to keep better track of which products are consistently being added to the basket.

Can I change my shop’s theme if I’ve activated the Create Your Own Tool?

If you decide to change your shop’s theme, this could end up messing with the Create Your Own Tool. If you do wish to change your theme, we’d recommend following these steps:

  • Change the template
  • Deactivate the Created Your Own Tool
  • Delete all CYO products
  • Re-activate the Create Your Own Tool

In the future, we’ll eliminate this hassle, allowing you to seamlessly change your CYO-activated shop’s theme.
